Coast Guard is an amazing step in life for a young man or woman.

Just to anyone that is still watching this in 2024... the red belt isn't just for trouble makers it's also given when a recruit isn't doing so well either laziness or just having a hard time. My daughter had to wear it when she didn't do well on a practice test. So don't freak out over red belt. If you see green (neon) it's medical.

Went threw in 99 Juliet 155. Chow was like a toast fest.. and god help you if the XO was in there eating. CCs esp other companies CCs would light your ass up. And you'd be surprised the basic things you forget and how ofter you mis speak. Things as simple as sir good afternoon sir.. just try not to ever march alone, just dont. Cant remember the squads name but for those that got into trouble they had to wear florescent orange belts, hold their right arm straight out, double time everywhere, and scream left, left, left which was funny to us but i dont imagine they thought so.. anyone remember that squads name fromt back then?

Last I heard 2023 Coast Guard was about 1500 recruits short. I'm a former recruiter 2007-2011, and our office got highest AFQT in the nation for recruits which was a 75 average. I always told applicants to qualify for as many jobs as they could and not put all their eggs in one basket for a single job. Back then, after Hurricane Katrina and the movie the Guardian the influx was Aviation Survival Technician (AST). Being in aviation I told these applicants about the 60% school fail out rate and that they really needed to have the will power, commitment, and sacrifice to be an AST. I made sure I told them to qualify for as many rates (jobs) that they could by having a high AFQT. We gave them resources to study online as well as ASVAB study guide recommendations. Listen, you guys and gals need to study and do good on the first attempt so you qualify for a back up job or two. The Coast Guard is a small service and we only have so many rates we can fill so the waiting time issue is due to the school wait times for certain of these popular rates. Sometimes the wait can be 2-3 years though sometimes they give you worse case scenario waiting times, my wait for AD A-School (before we had AMTs) was supposed to be 2-3 years, but in reality it was 13 months. Nevertheless expect talk to your recruiter about A-School wait times and have a backup rate or rates you like with the qualifying ASVAB scores to do them before you sign up!

Do yourself a favor join the Navy, Army or Marines if your a wuss with some smarts Air Force if your really really gots smart the space force. I respect the hell out of the coast guard but if you wanna work for Homeland Security just get a regular job with them you don’t have to sign contracts 😂

I Joined the Guard in 1976...I had been working Fire/Rescue for about 5 years; When I talked with the Recruiter, I was told I could get Corpsman school straight out of Boot Camp! The first day of boot camp I found out there was at least a 2 year waiting list to get into that School! I literally wasted 4 years, 1 Month, and 11 Days of my Life!!! In boot Camp, I chose to go to Radio Man School, The ONLY School available right out of Boot Camp! I did not want to chip Paint for 2 years while waiting for Corpsman School. I achieved E-5 in Just over 2 years... but If you are not enjoying what you enjoy doing it doesn't matter your Rank!! Back in the 70's we were Not paid a living wage as an enlisted person! As an E-5 with 2 years, I was Paid $452/mo Now an E-5 is paid $2600.//Mo Moral of the Story, Nothing has changed in the Guard except the PAY!!!

The advice given is very sound. Before you approach the recruiter, pick up a $20 ASFAB study guide. My score was high enough to choose any CG rate, and instead of waiting a year for basic, I got orders to report to USCG Resort Cape May, that next Monday, giving me 3 days to pack and say goodbye. I also studied the navigational rules of the road and the Blue Jacket Manual (Coastguardsmans Manual), before going to basic, and memorized the general orders. Dispite your physical achievements your ranking is ɓased primarily upon your academic scores. I graduated Nr. 1 in my basic company which gave me 1st billet choice. The top 4 or 5 choose pretty much where they want to go. After that, they take your wish list into consideration, but it's needs of the Coast Guard. If you finish dead last, you're likely to get a buoy tender on Guam or Kansas City or if you're very lucky, a small boat station in the Louisiana bayou region. People who want to be close to home will choose places like ATON Chattanooga or Kansas City. Alaska, California, Hawaii and Southern Florida are always wanted by a lot of folks. If you want to patrol the Carribean, any WMEC cutter in the 7th district will put you there. Expect to be out about 5 weeks and back in port 4-5 weeks. Patrol boats are out for about a week at a time. Small boat stations are on the water all the time. Especially when you don't plan to be. The CG Motto, Semper Paratis means Always Ready. To be ready you have to prepare before hand. Whether it's preparing for ASFAB, or preparing your boat to quickly get underway, or preparing physically and mentally for basic, the more prepared you are, the more rewarding your career. Prepare beforehand and you will always be ready. Good luck.

All the "cool" ratings have a very long wait time. Back in 2005 one of those cool ratings was Marine Science Technician. That rating was a 2 year wait time for school, while some other rating that's not so "cool" like Yeoman (Human Resource) was only a 3-5 months wait time on the list. A recruiter should have already informed new recruits about the wait time before they enlist, so they don't waste everyone's time and dropped out of military because of a long wait time. Great video man, it's unfortunate that others didn't listen to your advice.

How long are duty stations usually? I know deployments can vary from weeks to months but is a station like a 2 year thing or 4 years?

Ask what you can do for the CG and not what the CG can do for you and you will go very far.

OMG Andre, my grandson has been in 3 weeks and is sicker than a dog!! It is not covid thank goodness but as you said, the vomitting! and he has a terrible cough. He sounds so weak and we are worried...he has been in medical but they are releasing him tomorrow back into training. He is one of many recruits who have been so sick this last few days. So glad I found you, forwarded this on to my daughter to try and help her not worry so much.

Oh hell no it wasn't a normal job, they worked us to death man, we had port and starboard. They made us work so damn much especially when their were search and rescue cases. I was up two days. In 2003 boot camp was insane I had these two guys one they called little satan. I'll never forget those guys Laroach and po emmrick.

I was lucky that I was always at a station. Got to go home every night but had a lot of tragedies and now I am a disabled vet.

Don't get why people nowadays are getting such poor scores on the asvab. I was not a great high school student. I was a much better college student because the military taught me discipline and time management. However study before you take the asvab..math.logic etcs. Study.

So the coast guard does have barracks ? I was told you had to purchase your own housing once you get out of boot camp and that you just got a certain housing allowance.

I’m glad to hear reservists today get some benefits. When I joined in 1978 (Echo 101) I got zero benefits. I’ve been told that because the RK program split up my 6 months of active duty (The program allows high school juniors to attend CG boot camp during their summer break, then return to school for their senior year. Upon graduation you then attend CG class A school and any additional days needed to complete that 6 month obligation) I was not on continuous active duty long enough to qualify for benefits. I don’t get veterans preference on job application or VA loans because the CG have misplaced some of my military records. There was no GI Bill benefits when I was in as they had expired sometime around the end of the Vietnam War and a new one was still in the works.
